Proceedings of a court of inquiry in the case of Major Marcus A. Reno, concerning his conduct at the Battle of the Little Big Horn River, June 25-26, 1876

United States. Army. Office of the Judge Advocate General.

After the defeat of the Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer's 7th Cavalry by Native American forces under Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse (known popularly as Custer's Last Stand), much blame for the defeat (including allegations of drunkeness and cowardice) was cast upon Major Marcus Reno (second in command) for failing to lead remaining forces to Custer's rescue. Reno requested a Court of Inquiry to clear his name. This is the transcript of those proceedings. Very interesting reading as there are significant differences in the accounts of the survivors of the battle as to whether Reno and Captain Frederick Benteen could have rescued Custer. The Court cleared Reno of misconduct.
